三宅島の噴火（２）
9月以降、顕著な噴火は発生しなくなったが、その一方で陥没した火口から大量の火山ガスが放出される状況となった。火山ガスの主な成分は二酸化硫黄（亜硫酸ガス）で、最盛期には、一日あたり３万～５万ｔも放出されていた。二酸化硫黄は毒性が強く、特に喘息など呼吸器に疾患のある
人にとっては、きわめて危険なガスである。火山ガスの放出量は、その後低減傾向を示していたが、
2002年頃からは横ばい状態となり、その後再び減少して、2006年1月には、一日2000～4000ｔ程度の放出が続いていた。
