有珠山の噴火（３）
もし噴火の前に住民の避難が完了していなかったなら、国道付近で発生した最初のマグマ水蒸気噴火によって、多数の死傷者が出ていた可能性がある。現実に国道230号の上には、最大で直径３ｍ以上、最初の火口から600ｍほど離れた幼稚園にも、直径1ｍ前後の噴石が降り注いでいた。まさに、科学者・行政・住民間の互いの連携が、甚大な人的被害を防いだといえよう。

If the evacuation of residents had not been completed before the eruption, there is a possibility that the first phreatomagmatic eruption that occurred near the national highway would have caused many casualties. In reality, volcanic blocks with a diameter of around 1 meter were raining down on National Route 230, with a maximum diameter of more than 3 meters, and even on a kindergarten about 600 meters away from the first crater. Indeed, it can be said that the mutual cooperation between scientists, the government, and residents prevented serious human damage.
