有珠山の噴火（２）
一連の噴火によって、大量の噴石がビルや民家を直撃し、金比羅山の火口群からは熱泥流が流出して温泉街を襲った。国道230号にかかっていたコンクリートの橋を流すほど、泥流の勢いはすさまじいものであった。また、地下のマグマが上昇するに伴い、地表には地溝帯が出現するとともに、無数の断層を生じ、その上にあった建物が飲み込まれていくなどの被害が出た。
しかしこのとき、一人の死傷者も出さずにすんだのは、噴火前に住民の避難が完了していたためである。火山学者の情報を受けた各自治体が、すでに作成・公表してあった「有珠山火山防災マップ」に基づいて危険地区の住民に対して避難を指示し、住民も迅速に行動したのである。
