有珠山の噴火⑴
2000年3月に起きた北海道・有珠山の噴火は、日本で初めて噴火の直前予知に成功した事例である。有珠山では、3月27日から火山直下の地震が頻発し始め、29日には気象庁から「緊急火山情報」が発表された。これを受けて地元の1市2町は、危険地区の住民に対して避難指示を発令した。31日午後1時7分頃、有珠山の北西麓にあたる西山の山麓でマグマ水蒸気噴火が発生し、次々と火口が開いていった。翌4月1日には、洞爺湖温泉街のすぐ背後にある金比羅山の山腹でも噴火が始まった。噴火が終息するまでに開いた火口の数は、約70個に達している。
Eruption of Mt. Usu⑴
The eruption of Mt. Usu in Hokkaido in March 2000 was the first time in Japan that an eruption was successfully predicted. At Mt. Usu, earthquakes directly beneath the volcano began to occur frequently from March 27th, and on the 29th, the Japan Meteorological Agency announced an ``emergency volcano information.'' In response, one local city and two towns issued evacuation orders for residents in dangerous areas. At around 1:07 pm on the 31st, a phreatomagmatic eruption occurred at the foot of Mt. Nishiyama, located at the northwest foot of Mt. Usu, and craters opened one after another. The following day, April 1, an eruption also began on the slopes of Mt. Konpira, which is located directly behind the Toyako hot spring town. Approximately 70 craters had opened before the eruption ended.
